Reindeer visit, and Sami Culture Including Lunch from Tromso

Summary Description

Meet your tour group and Sami guides at a centrally located meeting place to start your adventure. Be sure to dress in warm clothing, including gloves and a hat. Board a comfortable vehicle for the 25-minute trip to the Sami camp.

Upon arrival at the camp, get a chance to feed the herd of over 200 reindeer. This herd is the source of their livelihood, a tradition for the Sami people, who are historically nomadic. Try out some lasso throwing on a practice target, gaining an appreciation of how the Sami manage their herd.

After the feeding, make your way inside the lavuu, or traditional tent, to warm up. Listen to stories and facts about the people's culture, traditions and history. Enjoy a lunch of bidos, a type of soup, and cake with coffee. Hear a performance of a joik, a song in the native Sami style.

Board your vehicle for the 25-minute return trip back to the departure point in Tromsø city center.

Description

The reindeer and the Sami have been living and working on this land for centuries and they have only recently invited guests to be part of their daily life. You will visit their camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 300 wild reindeer who will swarm all around and some will even eat from your hands. You will then be invited for hot drinks around the fire inside a warm candlelit gamme (Traditional Sami Hut) where lunch, bidos, cooked over the open fire will be served (a traditional Sami stew which is often served at Sami weddings and other special occasions).

After lunch you will be invited into a lavvu (Sami tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.
