Unmissable Experiences in Twante

Summary

Get picked up from your Yangon accommodations in the morning, after which you’ll be dropped off at the city’s boat jetty for the 15-minute ferry ride up the river toward Twante. Continue another 15 miles (25 kilometers) aboard public transport to reach down. Make sure to enjoy the view during your ride, as you’re likely to catch glimpses of small village life along the river. Once you arrive in Twante, you’ll make your first stop at a local pottery workshop, learning about the studio’s production methods for its red-clay pieces that date back several generations. You’ll then have time to wander through town before stopping for lunch at a local eatery. Proceed from there to Shwesandaw Pagoda, a 246-foot (75-meter) tall stupa built using Mon-style design traditions. You’ll also learn about the pagoda’s connection to holy relics, as two hairs from the Buddha himself are said to reside within its interior. After finishing your pagoda visit, begin the trip back to Yangon, encountering idyllic rice paddy fields, small villages, and the bright green colors of the river landscape as you ride back to the city. Photographers are sure to find plenty of scenes that will catch their eye. You’ll arrive back in Yangon by the afternoon and receive a drop-off back at your hotel.
