Burmese Charm in Quaint Thanlyin

Summary

Departing from your Yangon hotel in the morning, set off by private vehicle for Syriam (Thanlyin), a former capital of Myanmar located about 1.5 hours away. While exploring the sleepy 15th-century port town with your personal guide, you'll learn about the British, Portuguese, French, and East Indian influences and its history as a merchant city.  Soak up the pleasant atmosphere where tree-lined roads and universities offer a glimpse of local life. Then head to Yele Paya, a unique temple located on an islet in the middle of the Yangon River near the town of Kyauktan and accessible by local ferry. If you wish, feed the giant catfish swimming around the island (own expense).  You can purchase lunch (not included) and spend time at a riverside market then visit two more pagodas before the drive back to Yangon in mid-afternoon.

Why take this tour?

While often referred to by the name Syriam, Thanlyin captures the essence of boldly going where no one has gone before. Following the contours of the Bago River, spending 6 hours outside Yangon feels like wandering back in time and relive times gone by. Located at the confluence of the Yangon River and the town of Dala along the Bago River, Thanlyin (formerly known as Syriam) is a slow-life village located outside bustling Yangon. With its strategic location along the Yangon River and intertwined with equally charming Kyauk Tan, the town was originally known for its port. A peaceful and quiet atmosphere will come over you as soon as we enter the town borders, and wandering around gives you a sense that there most certainly still is serenity around Yangon.
