Summary

Following pickup from your hotel, depart Tulum and make the journey south to the biosphere. After roughly 30 minutes of driving down the Boca Paila Peninsula, stop to board your tour boat and continue the trip by water. Explore Boca Paila Lagoon while your guide tells you about the ecology and history of the area. Spend some time at a beach, snorkeling (gear is included in the tour price) and spotting manatees, weather conditions permitting. Next, move to Ascension Bay and visit resident colonies of nesting birds. Your guide tells you about the ecological importance of mangroves and takes you to find dolphins and sea turtles. Travel to Punta Allen for a Caribbean lunch and enjoy some free time. Then, head back to Tulum, and get dropped off at your hotel right around time for an early dinner.

The Sian Ka’an biosphere is more that 1 million acres (404,686 hectares) in size and is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. Also somewhat remote and lacking major hiking trails, it’s best visited with a guide. Discover the reserve by boat, visiting Boca Paila Lagoon and Ascension Bay with a guide, snorkeling and searching for marine life along the way. Plus, a Caribbean lunch at Punta Allen—located at the very end of the Boca Paila Peninsula—is included.
