Private Market Tour and Hands-On Cooking Lesson with a Local Family in Santiago

Summary

Your host Ivania and Carlos enjoy cooking together and learned to cook traditional family recipes from their mothers. They often watch cooking shows on TV and re-create the dishes for their friends and family, who always compliment them on their food and hospitality. Ivania and Carlos are very excited to share simple dishes they grew up eating, using fresh local ingredients and combining them to create wonderful flavors. These two really believe that cooking for someone is a way to give love, which brings them a lot of joy. Some of the dishes you might try during your experience are goat cheese, chili and olives with homemade sourdough bread, seaweed ceviche and risotto of mote (wheat) with goat cheese and meat. Your meal might end on a sweet note with some caramel semolina. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to experience Chilean culture and cuisine with two passionate locals - your taste buds will certainly thank you!

Why take this tour?

After you meet your hosts Ivania and Carlos at their home, they will drive you to the La Vega Central market. It is Santiago's main market with a wide variety of products and fresh fruit and vegetables from the Chilean Central Valley. The market is bright, colorful and bustling with activity! Ivania and Carlos will teach you about the local ingredients and how they are used in Chilean cuisine, and fill you in on the history behind the country's diverse cooking. After your market tour, you will join your hosts in their small kitchen for a fun hands-on cooking class. These two are very excited to introduce you to the diversity of Chilean food and culture, and feel the happiest when people leave their home with a full belly and a smile on their faces! During your class (that will last for about two hours), you will learn to prepare 2-3 authentic homemade Chilean dishes that you will later share with Ivania and Carlos at their dining table.
