Before the next bite, we’ll visit one of Lisbon’s principal churches, where you’ll glimpse the city’s dark past. Next, we’re off to sample Lisbon’s famous cherry liqueur. This tiny, 180-year-old family-run shop is exactly where you need to try one of the city’s most locally-loved drinks.
Next, it’s up the hill to one of Lisbon’s central squares where your guide will bring more of the city’s history to life. From the 18th-century earthquake to a fountain dating back to the same time, find out how history has shaped the city over the years.
Then you’ll wander down to try what Anthony Bourdain considered the best Portuguese pork sandwich there is, prepared by those who have done it best for over 50 years.
Continuing downhill through the hip and trendy neighborhood of Bica, you’ll arrive in one of the favorite watering holes of the Cais do Sodré neighborhood. Here we’ll sample expertly-prepared codfish and regional cheese and olives paired with local wine or beer. Savor the Portuguese’s most versatile fish while surrounded by the buzz of locals at lunch.
Next, wander over to the Instagram-worthy “pink street” to learn more about one of Portugal’s more interesting exports: canned fish. This staple of Portuguese cuisine will have you marveling at just how much flavor can be packed into a tin can!
Lastly, no Lisbon food tour would be complete without sampling a pastel de nata, one of our famous custard tarts. And where better to try it than the place that is giving the original pastel de nata strong competition for the title of best in the city?
