- Description
- Your Old Montreal walking tour begins in Place Royale, where the story of the city began. Surrounded by Old World buildings and quaint cobblestone streets, there’s no more atmospheric place to begin your journey into the city’s past.
- From there, you’ll head down Canada’s answer to Wall Street, briefly popping into the country’s oldest bank to marvel at its gorgeous design. Back outside, your guide will introduce you to Montreal’s famous “snobs”—a pair of statues that showcases the cultural divide between English and French Canadians.
- Next up is one of the undisputed highlights of your Old Montreal walking tour. You’ll skip the line at the stunning Notre Dame Basilica, a gem of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture that’s proudly held onto its cultural significance in recent decades (it was the site of Celine Dion’s 1994 wedding!). After an introduction from your guide, you’ll have some free time to explore the breathtaking interior on your own.
- Now that you’ve experienced the historic side of Old Montreal, it’s time to discover its lively contemporary culture. As you stroll down Le Royer Street, your guide will share insights into what it means to live in Montreal today. You’ll also enjoy a walk down the iconic St. Paul Street, which—despite being the oldest street in the city—is one of modern Montreal’s biggest hotspots. As you explore, you’ll learn about some of the most noteworthy events in the city’s recent history, including the 2011 theft of more than $18 million worth of maple syrup. (It doesn’t get more Canadian than that!)
- You’ll visit Place Jacques Cartier, a square honouring the 16th-century explorer who claimed Montreal for the French, and the lively Bonsecours Market before dropping into the chapel of the same name. Learn the story of the small wooden boats that hang from the ceiling and the role this sacred site played in the city’s maritime history.
- The chapel provides the perfect setup for the finale of your Old Montreal tour. Head towards the boardwalk for some more once-in-a-lifetime photos and stories about all things contemporary Canada, from pop culture to hockey. Last but certainly not least, you’ll board the boat for a scenic hour-long cruise along the St. Lawrence River. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views of Montreal passing by from the water.
