Full Description
  • First up on your Madrid morning food tour, you’ll unlearn everything you thought you knew about churros—and discover the real origins of chocolate—at a beloved neighborhood café serving up the best version of both in all of Madrid.
  •
  • Next, you’ll set off on the next stop in many madrileños’ morning routines: buying bread for the day. At a tiny storefront managed by a passionate young baker from northern Spain, you’ll learn why good bread in Madrid can be surprisingly hard to come by—and taste for yourself why this spot is the exception, in the form of their delicious homemade chorizo-stuffed rolls.
  •
  • From there, it’s off to the market! You’ll explore the vibrant Mercado de Antón Martín as locals from all walks of life do their daily grocery shopping. Along the way, you’ll stop at a variety of stalls to taste their finest products: flavorsome olives, cured meats, locally sourced produce, and Spain’s very own liquid gold: extra virgin olive oil.
  •
  • After tasting your way around the market, you’ll make your way to an unassuming neighborhood deli with a surprising past. It was here that the owner’s father held clandestine meetings to plot against Spain’s newly established dictatorship in the 1930s! Today, that same space is where you’ll sit down for a mini tasting of cheeses from around Spain paired with two different wines.
  •
  • The next stop is a favorite among locals and infamously hard to reserve—but luckily, your spot is already guaranteed! Here you’ll try freshly fried croquettes—a staple of tapas bar menus across Spain—and wash it down with an ice-cold beer while learning all about tapas culture.
  •
  • The only thing you should eat around Plaza Mayor is your next bite: a calamari sandwich. You can find it almost anywhere in the surrounding area, but today you're trying the best one around, with calamari rings cooked to perfection in light, crunchy batter. Enjoy it standing outside the bar, just like the locals do.
  •
  • Finally, you’ll finish your Madrid morning food tour on a sweet note at a pastry shop that’s been going strong since 1855. Opened by the Spanish queen’s own personal pastry chef, this incredible spot is seemingly hidden in plain sight. You might recognize this elegant shop from Spanish-American chef Jose Andrés' travel show, but we've known about this hidden gem for years! Here you’ll try a classic Spanish dessert with your choice of coffee or tea.

  • The only thing you should eat around Plaza Mayor is your next bite: a calamari sandwich. You can find it almost anywhere in the surrounding area, but today you're trying the best one around, with light, crunchy batter and cooked to perfection. Enjoy it standing outside the bar, just like the locals.
  •
  • Finally, you’ll finish on a sweet note at a pastry shop that’s been going strong since 1855. Opened by the Spanish queen’s own pastry chef, this incredible spot is seemingly hidden in plain sight. Here you’ll try a classic Spanish dessert with your choice of coffee or tea.

Description
  • You know there are dishes you can’t leave Madrid without trying, and on this tour you’ll try all of them. From breakfast to lunch, you’ll visit the century-old establishments that are the backbone of the city center—the places that make Madrid, Madrid. And like the capital itself, the bites on this tour are a melting pot of Spanish essentials (melt-in-your-mouth jamón ibérico) and only-in-Madrid classics (a calamari sandwich?!).

Full Description
  • First, you’ll unlearn everything you thought you knew about churros—and discover the real origins of chocolate—at a beloved neighborhood café serving up the best versions of both in all of Madrid.
  •
  • Next, you’ll set off to the next stop in many Madrileños’ morning routines: buying bread for the day.
As you snack and sip, you’ll discover the origins of each product and get insider tips for ordering wine in Spain.
  •
  • Your next stop is located in Madrid’s picturesque historic center. A favorite among locals, this spot is infamously hard to reserve—but luckily, your table is already guaranteed! Here you’ll try freshly fried croquettes—a staple of tapas bar menus across Spain—and wash it down with an ice-cold beer while learning all about tapas culture.
  •
  • The only thing you should eat around Plaza Mayor is your next bite: a calamari sandwich. You can find it almost anywhere in the surrounding area, but today you're trying the best one around, with light, crunchy batter and cooked to perfection. Enjoy it standing outside the bar, just like the locals.

  •
  • Please note that this description is an example and stops or tastes may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have a delicious experience.
  • Start your morning off with freshly-fried churros and thick, homemade Spanish hot chocolate at a spot that many madrileños don’t even know about.
  • Next, meet the young entrepreneurs behind one of only a handful of traditional, natural bakeries that are retelling the story of bread in Madrid. Here we’ll try a traditional snack and pick up a loaf to go.
  • Now it’s time to visit one of Madrid’s traditional markets, where neighborhood residents still come every morning to pick up ingredients for that day’s lunch. You’ll be one of those shoppers today as we visit our friends who work here and taste their products, from cured ham to olives to seasonal fruit. And that bread we picked up earlier? It’ll come in handy here, where some Spanish olive oil is calling its name.
  • We’ll weave through the colorful neighborhood streets, which by now will feel like your own, to our next stop. At this specialty deli that’s been open since the 1930s, you’ll enjoy a gourmet cheese and wine tasting.
  • From there, we’ll head into Madrid’s historic center as we make our way to the only restaurant near Plaza Mayor where you’ll consistently find locals. Here, you’ll try Madrid’s most beloved street food: the city’s signature fried calamari sandwich!
  • And since we couldn’t end without something sweet, we’ll pop into a historic pastry shop just down the road for one last bite.
  • And as with all Devour Madrid tours, you’ll receive our Devouring Madrid guide. Packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city, put down your guidebook and get ready to experience Madrid like a local!
