Reviews for Bran Castle

We visited Bran Castle as part of a small bus tour departing from Bucharest, which also included stops at Peleș Castle and Brașov. Unlike at Peleș, our tour guide was not permitted to accompany us inside Bran Castle. This was unfortunate, as I felt that having a guide would have brought the experience to life and added more historical context. I believe there is an option to book a guided tour within the castle itself, but due to time constraints, this wasn’t possible for us. The castle itself was fine, though a little underwhelming. Some of the Dracula-themed and horror-style props felt rather childish and detracted from the historical atmosphere. The torture exhibition was quite interesting, but it wasn’t made clear how it actually related to the history of the castle. Overall, while Bran Castle is a famous landmark, it wouldn’t make my list of top recommendations if your time in Romania is limited. There are more impressive and historically engaging sites to prioritise.

(Translated by Google) Highly hyped, but not implemented enough to truly capture the Dracula myth.

(Translated by Google) We went to see it but decided not to do the tour inside; it's very crowded and expensive. The surrounding area and the castle itself are very beautiful.

Buy the ticket from their official website. I really recommend you to buy the additional "torture room" ticket, its really worth it. The most enjoyable room was that room for us. The castles corridors are very narrow and it can be difficult to look around with lots of people around. Overall, my husband liked the bran castle more, and I liked the peleş castle more :)

We didn’t get inside the castle, it was too expensive and according to other reviews we thought that it’s not worth it. The castle is beautiful and we loved the stores just next to the entrance, lots of beautiful souvenirs and few dining options, very nice. A parking near by for 8 Lei per hour. The site was pretty crowded but still we enjoyed our visit.

(Translated by Google) Cute, suitable for rainy days, the extra payment part was really unnecessary. (Original)

(Translated by Google) The castle was built between 1377 and 1388 by the Saxons of Brașov, using their own funds—a rare example of private defensive construction. It stood on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, commanding the only mountain pass. The interior of the castle is symmetrical. The rooms adjoin one another haphazardly, staircases appear suddenly, and the corridors narrow and widen. This isn't an architectural error—it's a deliberate attempt to disorient the enemy. An invader breaking in would become lost in this labyrinth, becoming an easy target. Despite the legend of Count Dracula, Vlad the Impaler never lived here. It's believed he may have spent only a few nights here during military campaigns. One of the tower rooms has a window facing east. Local legend has it that if you look into it at dawn on the autumn equinox, you'll see a reflection not of yourself, but of someone you were in a past life. Sounds incredible? But it's a fact: in 1923, one of Queen Mary's guests, the British occultist Aleister Crowley, visited the castle in September. His diary contains a cryptic entry: "Bran guards the portal. The Saxons knew what they were building. Not protection from the Turks – protection from what's UNDER the mountains." In 2006, the castle was returned to the royal heirs, Queen Mary's grandson, Dominic of Habsburg.
