Arigato Food Tour – Asakusa with Ema

Our evening in Asakusa with Ema was honestly one of the highlights of our Tokyo trip. He has such a sweet and calming presence, and he made sure the entire experience felt slow, enjoyable, and perfectly paced. We tasted so many delicious dishes, each one better than the last, and his recommendations were absolutely spot-on. It felt less like a tour and more like walking around with a friend who truly knows and loves the area. Thank you, Ema, for such a memorable and heartwarming night in Asakusa. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide!

An enjoyable corner of Tokyo

Our three-hour daytime food tour of Sugamo was much more than a simple tasting experience. We sampled a wonderful variety of dishes from local shops, beginning with dorayaki—two light pancakes filled with red bean paste and a slice of butter—served warm alongside brown tea. The addition of local butter is Sugamo’s own twist on this classic Japanese sweet. Throughout the tour, we tried rice crackers, traditional sweets, and yet another style of dorayaki. Our lunch stop featured soba noodles in a rich duck broth. Trevor, our guide was knowledgeable and engaging, seamlessly blending history, food culture, and local stories. We visited two shrines and chatted with several residents, who greeted us with smiles and genuine curiosity. These small interactions added a warm, personal touch to our time in this charming corner of Tokyo.

A 5-star tour

Great experience, great food! Ethan was a very knowledgeable guide and a pleasure to spend a few hours with, visiting five or six small venues that we would never have found by ourselves.

Hiroshima was one of the cities we visited during our month long Japan trip and a Must See, of course. We had a wonderful food tour evening with ourt guide Aleef Daniels who took us to 3 different places in Hiroshima explaining the history of food in Hiroshoma including the piece de resistance - the unique and layered Okonomiyaki - this consisted of noodles, vegetables and topped with egg omelette. Aleef took us to a local place where many chefs cook this in front of you and you literally eat it off the furnace - it is such a fun experience! More seriously though, this food was borne out of post war Hiroshima and was a cheap and easy way for locals to sustain themselves. It originated here first although you may see other proliferations in other cities in Japan. It was a perfect evening to round off a really interesting but sombre day of reflection at the Peace Museum and beautiful Peace Gardens and I would highly recommend the food tour.

Very enjoyable tour!

Ethan was our guide for this incredible tour. He was engaging, knowledgeable, and was an all around great guide. The food and beverage selections were unique and of very good quality. We had a great time and enjoyed seeing the sights as we traveled from restaurant to restaurant. We highly recommend this tour.

Guide "Morten" led an excellent food tour, with a great knowledge of Japanese history. There was fantastic food variety, and we were happily stuffed. Recommend having the largest meal first instead of last.

We had a wonderful food tour in Osaka, guided by Micky. One of the things we loved about it was that Mickey gave a tour of much more than the food, which in and of itself was absolutely fantastic. But her knowledge and expertise in the history of the area was so valuable to us in particular the history and story she relayed to us with regard to the role of the Theater district in Osaka‘s early development was fascinating. The foods that Mickey chose for us really highlighted the specialties of Osaka. We and the other two people on the tour commented several times that we would have never known to go to the establishments that she brought us to taste all the different foods. Mickey was certainly a Fantastic ambassador for Arigato tours. We will definitely choose Arigato again when we return. Thank you!

Tasty wanderings!

We really enjoyed our tour with Natsumi! We learned a lot about the history of the area, the food culture of Osaka and dishes that were Natsumi’s personal favorites. The knife stop was really educational and we also loved learning about the crazy food signs that are an Osaka trademark.

Excellent guide and tour!

Food tours are one of the favorite experiences when visiting a new country and our tour with Alex was excellent. I took 3 of my kids and we all loved it, including one picky eater. It was my daighter’s 13th birthday and Alex even surprised us at one restaurant with singing from the lively staff with singing and a dessert. Can’t say enough about how great this tour was!

My husband, our infant son and I were lucky to have a private tour of Uji with Raquel as nobody else booked the date/time slot we picked. Raquel was informative, flexible with our baby needs, friendly and easy to talk to. She interacted with our son throughout as well which was delightful - it was like a friend was giving us a tour! The tour itself was enjoyable and the highlight of our 1-month long trip across Japan. Highly recommend both the tour and Raquel. Thank you!

An excellent relaxed tour

We were joined by a lovely couple, Bruce and Kayleigh, from the States on this tour. The tour took us around 4-5 different food places, with our starters and main meal being served in different places. We also visited a local knife shop which was interesting and made all the better because there was no hard selling by the lovely person who gave us the demo of the excellent knives. We had two guides Ike and Tomo who were knowledgeable and really friendly. By the end of the tour we were just eating, drinking and chatting

My sister and I did the Vegetarian Best of Shibuya Food tour. Ultimately we were a little disappointed in the experience. All the food was delicious and there was plenty of it. Our guide Wes was friendly and professional, and gave useful cultural information. However, we were expecting to have a more tailored tour of vegetarian-only restaurants - noting that one restaurant did make vegetarian food on special request, which we appreciated as we would not otherwise have visited. We’ve done quite a lot of other tours in Japan and we felt that, in comparison, this was not very good value for money or a particularly connecting experience. Overall this tour didn’t meet our expectations and we’d have a hard time wholeheartedly recommending it to others.

Clara was an amazing tour guide and the Shibuya tour was a highlight of my trip. We went into all sorts of small shops which I would have never found / gone to on my own. Throughout the tour Clara taught us about the food and table manners. It was a nice touch for Clara our guide to take photos of all the food and of the group through the tour so we could focus on the food and sights. I took the tour on my second night in Japan and it was an excellent intro which set a good starting point for the rest of my trip.

I had an excellent evening on an Osaka food tour. My guide, Natsumi was friendly, professional and took me to places where I saw and heard no tourists - a real plus for me. The different type of foods we tried were authentic local dishes, simply prepared and served and delicious! I arrived back at my hotel very full but very satisfied! Thank you Natsumi!

Awesome! Four of us did the Sake and Whiskey tasting with Shigeki and it was beyond my expectations. Out of the two weeks we were in Japan this was by far my favorite thing to do. Whiskey was not my favorite thing but it is now. I think it was due to Shigeki.He is an amazing and fun tour guy. He took us to places we never could have found by ourselves. Do ask for him! Cheers.
