Walking adventures in Exmoor National Park

Summary Description

We walk up the Doone valley through pastures alongside the beautiful Badgeworthy water.

We visit the R.D.Blackmore memorial stone and find the waterslide that John Ridd scaled to meet the beautiful Lorna. If you like, we read a little, then continue through the pages of the novel, finding the ruined medieval village where the outlawed Doone Clan hung out, and enjoy the spectacular scenery of this remote stretch of moorland. We will likely see Exmoor ponies, and will have a good chance of spotting our native Red deer, particularly splendid with full antlers, during the rut.

If booked,we will stop for lunch as John Ridd himself would have, in a sheltered combe, with homemade pasties just as he describes. Delicious produce from our farm and garden will perk us up for the walk to Oare church along an ancient packhorse way.

We will safely guide you over some pretty remote country, so that you can confidently enjoy this beautiful landscape.

Oare church is at least 800 years old, and mentioned in the Domesday book with a wealth of history within its ancient walls.

You have an option to finish our experience with a convivial pint at The Staghunters inn, another great Exmoor tradition.

Wild About Exmoor

About operator:

Guided walking tours on Exmoor showcasing the very best of the landscape, the people who live here and the famous Starry Skies, free of light pollution. Tours can include a traditional farmhouse roast lunch or supper back at our typical Somerset "longhouse", a pub lunch and/or a very special homemade picnic out on the moor. Choose from an "Exmoor inspires" walk, where a local tale, such as R.D.Blackmore's Lorna Doone, is woven through the valley, visiting scenes from the novel en route. Or experience the very views that inspired works of poetry such as Kubla Khan, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We also visit seaside towns such as Lynmouth and Lynton, exploring the architecture and revisiting the calamitous flood of 1952. This tour includes a trip on a Victorian Heritage Steam Railway with a cream tea. Through the Summer months you can join us for a forest walk at dusk to hear migratory nightjars churring, groups can enjoy a delicious barbecue, with homemade produce from our farm.
