Description
It looks like a small fairytale castle rising from the river, but this tower was built in 1515 as a beacon and fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour. It also served as a prison and as the departure point for many of the “voyages of discovery” that transformed Lisbon into the world’s main trade hub in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The visit also includes a tour of the pits and holes where the prisoners were thrown into. At the very top is a terrace with wonderful views of the Tagus estuary and the neighbouring landmarks. The tower has five floors which lead to a roof terrace. The floors are, from bottom to top: The Governor’s Hall, The Kings’ Hall, the Audience Hall, the Chapel and the Roof terrace.
