Sintra, Pena Palace & Regaleira Tour

We really enjoyed the tour of Sintra. It was great to have a tour with tickets to the Pena Palace included avoiding long lineups. Our host Anna was fantastic!

We had an absolutely wonderful day on the Sintra, Pena and Regaleira Tour from Lisbon, and much of what made the experience so memorable was our guide, João. João was fantastic from beginning to end. He has a very pleasant, upbeat personality and was simply a pleasure to spend the day with. He was extremely accommodating, regularly checking to see if we needed anything or wanted to make adjustments along the way. We were a group of eight, filling the van, so it felt almost like a private tour, and João made an effort to get to know everyone in our group. What really set him apart, though, was his knowledge and storytelling. Rather than simply giving us dates and historical facts, João explained the history behind what we were seeing, why things happened, and the personalities and ideas that shaped these places. His storytelling brought the history to life and gave us a much better appreciation for everything we were seeing. His English was also excellent. A great example of his level of service came at the end of our day. We had spent a little more time than planned at several stops and were running late for a 7:00 dinner reservation in Lisbon. João offered to call the restaurant himself and speak with them in Portuguese to arrange a later reservation. It worked, and I honestly don't think we would have had the same outcome without his help. That was well beyond what we expected from our guide. As for the tour itself, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are both beautiful, but Regaleira was the favorite for our group. Learning about the property's owner, the ideas behind its creation, and the connections and symbolism involving the Knights Templar made exploring the palace and its incredible grounds especially fascinating. Pena Palace was spectacular in a completely different way. João's explanation of its history and the many architectural influences helped us understand that what initially looks like an unusual mixture of styles actually tells a much bigger story. Once you understand the meaning behind the different facades and the philosophy of the king who created it, you see the palace very differently. The stops at Cabo da Roca and Cascais were a perfect way to round out the day. Cabo da Roca provided spectacular coastal scenery, and our approximately 45-minute stop in Cascais gave us a nice introduction to the town, enough that we decided to return and spend another half day there on our own. This is a full day, but there is a tremendous amount packed into it: beautiful palaces, fascinating history, incredible scenery, Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais. We felt it was absolutely worth it. And if you have the opportunity to request a guide, ask for João. His knowledge, storytelling, personality and genuine desire to make sure everyone had a great experience turned an excellent tour into one of the most memorable days of our trip to Portugal.

It was a great way to see the sights without having to worry about tickets or where to go or how to get there. Our tour guide was AMAZING and made the experience even better! We didn't get to walk the gardens of the castles as much as I would have liked, but with a time crunch it's understandable. Overall, a great experience and great way to see Sintra in a day!
