Meet Mahrukh at her delightful apartment in South Mumbai, and savor a refreshing Parsi raspberry soda as you get to know a little about her, her family, and her culinary heritage.
After your chat, set off to nearby Grand Road Market, a mass of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and other specialties. Peruse the stalls and watch as Mahrukh picks out the freshest ingredients. As you explore, tap into Mahrukh’s knowledge of local cuisine, learning its secrets and how it was influenced by the British and Gujarati community.
Next, return to the apartment for your cooking class. Learn how to prepare signature dishes such as akuri, chicken pulao, and daal (lentils).
Enjoy a traditional meal of dishes that might include saria with lagan nu achaar (rice crisps with date pickle), tam tamata prawns (spicy prawns), jardalu na gosht (slow-cooked lamb in apricot gravy), roast chicken, and lagan nu custard (nut-topped caramel custard with vermicelli and yogurt).
Afterward, say your goodbyes and leave with new recipes, a full stomach, and the knowledge you have a new friend in Mumbai. Your experience ends when you leave the apartment.
Please note: Food during this experience is meat-based, with no vegetarian alternatives offered. No alcoholic drinks are included. Mahrukh lives in a 6th-floor apartment, and because the elevator only travels to the 5th floor, you need to climb one flight of stairs to her apartment. Please bear in mind that this is not a professional cooking class, but a culinary and cultural experience in a home with a local resident.
