Quiahuixtlan is known as “the place where rain is situated at the top.” In Bernal Hill, you can find vestiges of the most beautiful prehispanic Totonac cemeteries in the world, remains of pyramids, and a ball game court in which you can see a panoramic view of the beaches of Villa Rica in the Gulf of Mexico.
Cempoala is located 45 km from the port. You arrive at the “place of the twenty waters,” so named because this place is surrounded by the rivers of the region. This is one of the major archaeological sites in the state, with several architectural buildings such as Templo Mayor (Great Temple), Templo de las Chimeneas (Temple of the Chimneys), Círculo de los Gladiadores (Gladiators’ Circle), Templo de Caritas (Caritas’ Temple), Templo del Dios del Viento y la Cruz (the Temple of the god of the wind and the Cross), and a beautiful museum.
It’s also a mystical complex that was the second capital of the Totonac empire before being dominated by the Aztec Empire. To finish with this historical tour, you visit Antigua, where you can find the legacy of the Spanish conquest, like Casa del Cabildo, the first town in New Spain; the Chapel of the Rosary, which is the first Catholic church in Mexico; and the house of Hernán Cortés.
