This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Meet Duneeshya at her home and together take a tuk-tuk to the Dematagoda market. Duneeshya will help you discover the local and seasonal ingredients available and will teach you a few words in Sinhalese, so you can talk to the vendors yourself before purchasing ingredients for your cooking class. Return to Duneeshya's home and learn to cook home style Sri Lankan dishes. Duneeshya has an old, Sri Lankan style kitchen that does not have modern equipment or cabinets. The kitchen can get a bit crowded so she has set up a small table on the side where you will prep ingredients before entering the kitchen for the final cooking. You will start your cooking class by helping Duneeshya prep for the meal by cutting vegetables and grating coconut the traditional way. During your two hour hands-on cooking class, you will learn to make dhal curry (lentils), fish ambulthiyal (sour fish curry), gotu kola sambol (salad), coconut sambol, beans curry and watalappam (coconut custard pudding). Afterwards, sit down together with Duneeshya at her dining table to enjoy the meal you have just cooked.
