Meet a driver for pickup in Granada, and travel out of the city to the starting point of the hike, at roughly 8,200 feet (2,499 meters). The hike to the summit of Pico del Veleta is roughly four hours uphill including breaks, and three hours downhill, with a moderate pace throughout.
Start walking through the scenic glacial Valley of San Juan, where you’ll see flowing water and blooming wildflowers at the edge of the trail. Part way through the hike you’ll reach Posiciones del Veleta, where fortifications were built during the Spanish Civil War, looking out across the northern face of Sierra Nevada and year-round snowfields.
Pause to eat and drink at Posiciones del Veleta, then continue up the northwest ridge to the summit, passing Veleta’s imposing North Wall. Enjoy some time on the peak to take in the view of the surrounding mountains and the coast, as well as the pure, high-altitude air.
Make your descent towards the Dilar Glacier Valley and a series of mountain lakes, then pause for another cool drink at the end of the trail. This full-day hiking tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.
