Oaxaca Mezcal Tour with Craft Beer and Cuisine Pairing

Summary

In this tour for groups of 8 or more, we visit traditional mezcal palenques, both ancestral clay pot production, and distilleries which produce their mezcal in artisanal copper stills, or alembics. We do our best to illustrate all stages of production, as they are occurring, with nothing being pre-planned for tourists. Our goal is to provide the most real, and un-touristy full day experience as possible; in most cases we have an opportunity to enter into the modest home of a family of palenqueros, affording our clients to truly learn about the culture of the makers of this fine agave spirit. Sample to your heart's content, photograph as you wish, and of course ask questions. Throughout the day you will have an opportunity to sample approximately 30 mezcals, with opportunities to buy (only if you are so inclined, with no pressure whatsoever) at a fraction of retail. We provide purified water, and salty (and sweet) snacks throughout the day, since lunch is typically rather late in the afternoon. The day concludes with a five course meal pairing Mexican craft beer with traditional Oaxacan cuisine, in a lush rural setting. And of course, more mezcal for the asking.

Your leader/facilitator/guide is a mezcal expert who dedicates his working life to teaching about mezcal, agave, pulque & aguamiel; and nothing else. Randall has been in the craft beer and mezcal business in the US for more than 15 years, hailing from Austin, TX, now a permanent resident of Oaxaca. Alvin has been a permanent resident of Oaxaca for more than 15 years, is certified as a Master Mezcalier, and has written over 40 articles about mezcal, craft beer, agave, pulque and sustainability. About operator:

Mezcal Educational Excursions of Oaxaca offers spirits aficionados, novices & industry professionals 1 - 3 day mezcal tours in Oaxaca's central valleys and beyond. Learn about agave / maguey, photograph, sample, buy. We visit small, family operated distilleries (palenques) using clay pot production & traditional copper stills (alembics). You'll finish the day also understanding the families' cultures. Inquire regarding our expertise, testimonials, cost, etc. Ask about group tour packages for not only about mezcal and pulque, but also delving into Oaxacan cuisine and craft beer pairing. Considering a business plan exporting mezcal with your own label, or opening a bar or restaurant with a healthy complement of mezcal, or a mezcaleria? We are also consultants in this respect. Or, if you are a photographer or documentary film maker, we have assisted this type of professional on many occasions over the past decade. Mezcal is a full time passion, but a part-time vocation; so inquire early.
