Medieval Senses Walking Tour in Athens

Summary

Meet your guide in Monastiraki Square in Athens and get a brief introduction to the city’s medieval past as a prelude to your tour. Learn how Athens was part of the Byzantine Empire from around the 6th century, and then controlled by the Burgundians, Aragonese and Florentines before being conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th century. Then, led by your guide, stroll through the cobbled streets and lively squares to visit some of its most noteworthy medieval sites. As you walk and talk, hear about the empires that governed the city, and see some of the hidden landmarks that betray their architectural and artistic influence. Learn how Athens became a duchy ruled by Crusader knights during the 13th century, and visit a string of Byzantine and Ottoman remnants and landmarks. Discover the house of a saint, descend into eerie catacombs, and peep inside tiny churches glittering with Byzantine-era icons and artworks. You’ll also explore the remains of a Byzantine monastery, an Ottoman school later converted into a prison, and a 17th-century Turkish bathhouse that’s one of the city's best-preserved Ottoman relics. After around three hours, your tour concludes when you say goodbye to your guide.
