Full Description
  • For the cathedral visit, it is compulsory to rent audio headsets for the group. Upon booking you will be imposed to buy the necessary tickets that include an audio headset enabling a rich & detailed explanation by your guide in a smooth and relaxed atmosphere. This option is only available to registered travel agencies like ours and for individuals or groups accompanied by a certified guide.
  • The Cathedral
  • The old city centers around its Gothic cathedral, Our Lady of Strasbourg, built of red sandstone and described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel”! Follow your guide for the visit of the Cathedral* including the marvelous façade that provides one of the finest picture books of the Middle Ages that you will ever see. The hundreds of sculptures which almost seem to leap out at you from the wall make great use of light and shadow effects. Another major attraction that your guide will comment are the stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 14th centuries and that form a particularly enchanting sight along with the rose window. Finally, the highlight of the visit is the amazing Renaissance astronomical clock. Built in 1843 it features an orrery, a rotating display of the sun and moon, a planetary calendar, and even a mechanical rooster. Each day at around 12:30, the bird crows and a conga line of apostles issues forth from the clockworks, led by a little Christ.
  • The Old Town & Petite France district
  • After the visit of the cathedral, reach the Petite France district. Historically, this was the poor section of the city occupied by mills and tanneries, both of which depended on the river and its downward flowing branches to support their work. Today, the neighborhood is one of the most charming of Strasbourg with its colorful 16th and 17th century half-timbered houses such as the ‘Maison des Tanneurs’ that your guide will certainly point out.Your walk in this charming area will lead you to our final stop: a series of fortified bridges and their three towers. This succession of three bridges linking arms with the Ill River is dominated by three 14th century towers, remains of the ancient medieval ramparts, which totalized 90 towers. The bridges themselves were once capped by a wooden roof.

The bridges themselves were once capped by a wooden roof.
  • After meeting your expert guide outside your central Strasbourg hotel, begin your walking tour of this beautiful city. Listen to stories of Strasbourg’s history and its German heritage, and see that heritage firsthand at the first stop of the day — the Grande Ile.
  • Stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s pretty pedestrian-friendly lanes to see the Medieval Maison Kammerzell. It was once a private home, and is now a restaurant and hotel. See the statue of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the Gutenberg printing press, who was living in Strasbourg when he invented it. Pass by the ornately decorated 18th-century Palais Rohan, a palace where Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte both stayed.
  • Continue walking through the Grande Ile to the Cathedral of Notre Dame, one of the most magnificent buildings in Strasbourg. Admire the 12th- and 14th-century stained glass and rose windows set into all that imposing stonework and topped with spires.
  • Visit the neighborhood of La Petite France, which used to be where workers in the milling, tanning and fishing trades lived. Many of the half-timbered houses they once called home remain, overlooking the little canals that run through the neighborhood. Find out where the district got its name — a 15th century hospital for people suffering from syphilis.
  • Walk along the cobblestoned streets and take advantage of the many photo opportunities — of canals, covered bridges and the Vauban Dam — as you pass the Old Butcher’s House, Saint Thomas Church and the Custom’s House.
  • Your tour concludes after roughly two hours, ending in the center of Strasbourg where you can continue exploring on your own.
