Description
  • Visit the Alsace-Moselle Memorial
  • The Alsace-Moselle Memorial is the result of regional desire and effort. It attempts to explain the complicated history of Alsace and Moselle, particularly during the time of the Second World War. From 1940 to 1945, Alsace and Moselle were the only areas of the French territory to be annexed by the Third Reich and to experience the extreme violence of a totalitarian regime. The agony cannot be understood without retracing the historical steps of a region long disputed by France and Germany, whose culture is richer today because of this long struggle. This place offers a history lesson available to all, and teaches the necessity to unite Europeans in their diversity and in the respect and dignity of every person in order to offer them peace and freedom. Here you will enjoy a visit and then some free time for personal discovery.
  • After the visit of the Memorial, your tour guide will certainly have you follow the Alsace wine route that is lined with medieval castles, small towns and breathtaking views of the valley and the Vosges Mountains. To make your private tour a great experience, your driver/guide will certainly indicate a highly recommended local restaurant of the region for lunch. It is also possible to stop at one of the many vineyards to visit wineries or participate in a wine tasting session.
  • Then Reach the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp After lunch, we will take you to the Struthof Camp where you will be able to follow a walking tour with an excellent guide. On 21 April 1941, near the village of Struthof, the Nazis opened a concentration camp, KL-Natzweiler. The central camp, the only concentration camp in France, was located in the then annexed Alsace region. Its annexes, scattered over the 2 sides of the Rhine, made up a network of nearly 70 camps, more or less large.
  • Of the nearly 52,000 detainees of KL-Natzeiler, about 35,000 did not go through the central camp. A labor camp supporting the Nazi war industry, it was also used for medical experiments by Nazi professors from the Reich University of Strasbourg. On 23 November 1944, the Allies discovered the site evacuated by the Nazis since September. Some deportees from the camp annexes had their sufferings prolonged in the spring of 1945 on the “Death Marches”. From 1941 to 1945, the KL-Natzweiler was one of the most murderous camps of the Nazi system. Nearly 22,000 deportees died there.

  • Then Reach the Natzwiller-Struthof Concentration Camp
  • After lunch, we will take you to the Struthof Camp where you will be able to follow a walking tour with an excellent guide. Of the nearly 52,000 detainees of KL-Natzeiler, about 35,000 did not go through the central camp.

  • After the tour, return to Colmar and end of our services.
  • During this highly recommended small group private day trip from Colmar, charming towns and the most interesting landmarks of Alsace will be on your program. Depart from the small town of Colmar with your tour guide and discover the beautiful village of Turckheim. The village is a perfect starting point for a tour as it is a traditional Alsatian village with fewer tourists.
  • Throughout the centre of Turckheim there are plenty of traditional Alsace style houses to admire, overflowing with flowers, and a few specific buildings of interest: mostly dating from the 16th and 17th century. These include the town hall, the hospital and the guard house. The most notable features are the fortifications and the three original gateways that surround the old town. While these defenses are common in some parts of France they are very unusual in the Alsace region. Enjoy a walking tour of the village with your guide. Other villages that might be of interest include the villages of Eguisheim or Kaysersberg. If these were on your bucket list, then just ask your driver/guide as it since this is a personalized private tour, we are flexible on the program.
  • Your tour then continues onto the beautiful town of Riquewihr. Surrounded by ramparts, the village has been very fortunate to survive war and destruction. Its tiny cobblestoned streets, fortified walls and old houses have preserved their 16C splendor and have remained virtually intact, making for remarkable architectural harmony. Enjoy free time for personal discovery and lunch (not included).
  • In the afternoon reach the Breathtaking Alsace ‘Wine Route’ and Visit a Mighty Castle
  • Located between the Rhine valley and the Vosges mountain range, the 60 year old wine route winds across the slopes for more than 170 kms. The itinerary leads across rows of undulating, vine covered hills, and through quaint villages with narrow streets and charming flower decked houses clustered around the local church steeple. As you stop in one of these villages, experience a wine tasting session during which you will be introduced to the local wines.
  • Finally, reach the medieval castle of Haut Koenigsbourg. Here, follow your guide for a tour of this mighty fortress that overlooks the valley. The Haut Koenigsbourg castle was built in 12th century; the Castle occupied a strategic position controlling the wine and wheat routes to the North and the salt route that came from the East. Entrance fee to the castle not included in the price. Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg visit includes a large number of steps and uneven terrain, you must be in good physical condition to visit this monument. On this full day tour, benefit from the undivided attention of your guide on this private tour. Please note that we also organise this tour as a day trip from Strasbourg, including the visit of Colmar and its famous landmarks such as the Pfister House.
