Day 1: Marrakech → Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou → Boumalne Dades
Kick off your Marrakech to Fes desert tour with an 8:00 AM departure from your hotel or riad. Traverse the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N’Tichka pass, standing tall at 2260 meters. As you travel, enjoy picturesque views of mud-brick Berber villages and shepherds with their flocks against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. There will be plenty of photo stops, as well as breaks for coffee and stretching your legs.
By midday, you'll reach the UNESCO-listed Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, famously featured in films like "Lawrence of Arabia," "Gladiator," and "Game of Thrones." Explore this iconic mud-brick village before heading to Ouarzazate, Africa's own Hollywood, known for its massive film studios.
Post-lunch, discover the Skoura oasis and the beautifully preserved Amridil Kasbah. Your journey continues through the Valley of Roses to Kalaa Mgouna, culminating in an evening at a charming guest house in the Dades Valley, where dinner awaits.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Tinghir → Merzouga
Begin your day with a scenic drive along the road of 1001 Kasbahs towards the Tinghir oasis, admiring fortified villages along the former caravan routes. In Tinghir, once a French military post, delve into the oasis. Walk alongside the stream, observing locals at work farming and herding.
Your exploration leads you to the stunning Todgha Gorges. After lunch at a local café, head to Rissani, a spiritual center where the founding dynasty of Morocco’s current rulers originated. Later, journey through rocky landscapes to Merzouga, where a camel caravan awaits to take you across the Erg Chebbi dunes to witness a breathtaking sunset.
The day ends with dinner under the stars and overnight entertainment from local nomads playing traditional drums at your Sahara desert camp.
Day 3: Merzouga → Midelt → Fes
Rise early for a sunrise camel trek across Erg Chebbi, followed by breakfast and a shower back at the camp operator’s lodge in Merzouga (luxury camp guests enjoy these amenities on-site).
Depart Merzouga and drive towards Fes, passing through the Ziz Valley and the capital of the Tafilalt region, Errachidia. Lunch in Midelt precedes your passage over the Middle Atlas Mountains, with potential sightings of Barbary apes and scenic views of cedar forests and the ski resorts of Imouzzar and Ifrane.
Arrive in Fes by late afternoon, where your unforgettable desert tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or riad.
