For the performance minded you can take Old Saddle road, the rollercoaster of Big Island. You will Climb to an altitude to 6,600 feet, then drop down on the east side of the island into Hilo.
Your first stop will be Rainbow Falls followed by a breathtaking drive on the Old Mamalahoa Highway until you reach the 420 foot high Akaka Falls. From there you have various options, Umauma falls, going down to Laupahoehoe, the Waipio Lookout, grabbing Malasadas at Ted’s, and shopping in Waimae town.
