A zoo unlike any other
The Amsterdam Royal Zoo is most commonly known as ARTIS, which is part of the museum’s official name in Latin, Natura Artis Magistra. It is located in the east of the city, near the botanical gardens.
The enchanting Amsterdam zoo is home to more than 550 different animal species and over 700 trees and plant types. Visit the Savanne, where giraffes live side by side with the zebras and kudus. Or spend your day in the company of sea lions, elephants, jaguars, or chimps and learn more about their natural habitats. ARTIS also boasts an impressive butterfly pavilion and Insectarium, which is climate-controlled to replicate their natural environment.
The 19th-century buildings include an exhibit where you can learn more about the city’s long history with water and canals. Amsterdam’s Royal Zoo also has a planetarium, where you’ll be taken on an exciting journey into outer space to discover more about the stars and our galaxy.
