After hotel pickup in the morning, your day tour starts with the drive to Zhujiajiao, listening to commentary from your guide along the way about Shanghai's history. You'll also enjoy views of the Yangtze River Delta metropolitan region.
Zhujiajiao is one of the eight water towns on the outskirts of Shanghai, known for its 1,000-plus years of history. When you arrive, stroll along the alleyways, cross the stone Fangsheng Bridge, and visit a private garden, owned by a local, where you can browse a collection of antiques from 2,000 years ago to the late 19th century. Finally, hop on a wooden boat for a ride along the small canals.
Next, head back toward Shanghai, and enjoy lunch at a dim sum restaurant before your afternoon sightseeing of the city. Head to Old Town Shanghai to visit the Yuyuan Bazaar, aka Yu Garden, where 200-year-old buildings exemplify Qing architecture. Follow your guide on a walk along back streets, gaining insight into the lifestyle and environment of the locals and migrants who live here.
Continue to the Former French Concession area, and walk along Sinan Road while your guide shares information about China's more recent history of the early to mid-1900s. You can also visit the Bund district, if you wish, to explore Zhongshan Road and see the Jardine Matheson Building and the Fairmont Peace Hotel. Your tour ends in the evening with hotel drop-off in the city.
