Zufrieden :)

A Worthwhile Outing

Wild Rover tours are well organised and have a separate driver and tour guide. I arrived at the pickup point, Starbucks, 30 minutes before departure and the bus was already there. The driver and guide introduced themselves and indicated there was time for a coffee and toilet break before we departed. Seating had been allocated which worked well for me as I was placed with another person also travelling solo. The bus was comfortable and air conditioned, however doesn’t have a toilet. There are stops approximately every 2.5 hours. Commentary was provided as we travelled through Dublin and for parts of the journey. My only criticism was the tour guide twice lecturing passengers about respect and being quiet while he was speaking. He had been a teacher and while this is ok for him to expect in his classroom, passengers are allowed to speak on a tour and he was interrupting people’s conversations when he decided to speak. Maybe a sound or comment such as ‘I’m about to give some more information’ and a short pause would be more appropriate rather than expecting instant silence. All the good work of building a rapport was undone so quickly (and this comment comes from an observer, not someone speaking). Our first stop was Belfast. The people choosing the Black Cab tour were dropped at a shopping centre where toilets were available. The drivers sorted passengers into cabs. This saves any concern of travelling alone and being charged extra. All drivers had a history with the Irish conflict. Most were former prisoners. The were also drove genuine cabs, though not all black. I’d head some tour companies use mini-buses rather than cabs. The rest of the group were taken to the Titanic Museum. Everyone met there two hours later, the cabs having dropped people at the museum. There was time for everyone to access the toilets and purchase a snack. No hot food is allowed on the bus, however hot drinks are ok. The group then travelled to Dunluce Castle. We had 30 mins to tour the site. The scenery is spectacular, however people with mobility issues were limited by what they could access. The third stop was the Giants Causeway, arriving around 1:30pm. There was a time allocation of two hours at this site. There are two walk paths, however part of the upper path was closed. Walkers could return the same way or walk down steps to the lower path. On the lower path there is a shuttle bus. The walk to the causeway is down hill. The shuttle is 1 euro in each direction. There are two dining options, a hotel and cafe. We then did a pleasant coastal drive back to the highway, spotting Scotland shrouded in mist in the distance. All entrance fees are covered in the booking fee.

Only two stops

It's a very long trip. The only two stops are at the Cliffs of Moher and Galway. My suggestion would be: make a quick photostop at the Burren or the Atlantic Way. It was such a bummer driving by those beautiful landscape and not having the opportunity of taking a photo. What I do not like as well, is asking for tips... Well, we did enjoy Galway and the Cliffs! So, three stars.

History, pints, and sheep dogs!

This was a fantastic day trip. Dermot was a friendly and capable driver. Ian was a fount of knowledge with great recommendations and a good bit of humour. Kilkenney was a lovely, walkable town with some great shops. Glendalough had the perfect mix of ancient history with calm serenity. There was just enough time to reward yourself with a pint after a walk around the lower lake. The highlight of our day was the sheep farm. Watching the dog work, learning how the flock is managed throughout the year, and getting to cuddle a lamb - what's not to love? While we kept to a strict time schedule, there was enough time to thoroughly enjoy each location - and no motorway service stops!

Each day we had a different driver and tour guide, and each one was really good. We really enjoyed the tours even though it was a little scary with the roads being so narrow, omg each driver had such skill. Thank you for a great time.
