The Atomium is a modernist building, originally constructed as the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed as a tribute to scientific progress, as well as to symbolise Belgian engineering skills at the time, renovated as a major national event between 2004 and 2006, the Atomium - which was not intended to survive Expo 58 - is today the most popular tourist attraction in the capital of Europe.
The Atomium symbolizes an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times, referring to the power of nuclear energy that in 1958 was intended for peaceful use.
