Kalipuna Island is a unique Garifuna Cultural Haven first home to 3 Ugandan women and later utilized as a base for the booming agro-producing and timber industry in the area. Over Johnson as it was formerly known was occupied by native Garinagu seeking refuge after Hurricane Greta in the 1940’s and also used as their farm land. The island is a landmark for the oldest well providing potable water for over 70 years in the area. It affords traveling guests the blessing to fully Immerse in the Garifuna Culture which is an impressive masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity as declared by UNESCO.
