A Traditional, Vegetarian Sri Lankan Cooking Class in the Heart of Colombo

Summary

This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Join Nalinka and her cook Kusum for a cooking class in their open style kitchen. Since Kusum does not speak any English Nalinka does a great job of explaining the ingredients, spices used and cooking process. During your 1-hour hands-on cooking class you will learn to knead the dough for the string hoppers and try your hand at using the noodle press to press out the dough in circles. Then while the string hoppers cook, cut the ingredients for the potato and tomato curry, coconut sambol or mallum and learn to cook them. Your cooking lesson will last about an hour before you join your host at her dining table to enjoy the meal Sri Lankan style, using your hands!

Why take this tour?

Nalinka lives in a beautiful family home in the heart of a lush, residential neighborhood in Colombo 5. Her creativity and love for design is visible in her beautifully decorated home. Her contemporary home is tastefully decorated with handpicked art, photographs and unique pieces of furniture. Nalinka also enjoys painting, yoga and travel. Your healthy, vegetarian Sri Lankan cooking experience starts with a glass of refreshing fruit juice. A traditional Sri Lankan meal is Ayurvedic, healthy, and cooked with minimal or no oil. Nalinka turned vegetarian since she started to practice yoga and since most Sri Lankan dishes are made using local vegetables and fruits, it is very vegan friendly as well. On this experience you will learn about Sri Lankan cuisine and culture as you cook traditional Sri Lankan food with Nalinka in her kitchen.  Please choose between either the string hopper or rice and curry meal when making your reservation request.
