Scratch beneath the surface of Bairro Alto and Chiado on this fully guided tour of its cultural and culinary delights!
You’ll begin your day at one of the most unique spots in the capital: the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint (Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara). Come prepared to have your breath taken away at the incredible views over Lisbon’s landscape. After you’ve taken in a slice of the city’s views, get a slice of Portuguese cuisine with an authentic pastel de nata when you stop by a local bakery. Made up of the perfect balance of pastry, cinnamon, sugar and lemon you’ll see why these treats have become a Portugese speciality.
As you wind your way down the charming streets of the neighbourhood, your local guide will fill you in on this district’s unique charm. Before long, you’ll arrive at an authentic metalwork workshop - the place where Lisbon’s famed street lamps are made (weekday tours only). Chat with the metalsmith whose family has been in the trade for over 200 years and get a sense of the true artistry that went into crafting Lisbon. You’ll leave with a newfound knowledge as well as a complementary small souvenir to remember your visit!
It’s time to discover another cornerstone of the city, the Livraria Bertrand - which holds the title as the world’s oldest operating bookshop! If your tour takes place over a weekend, your tour will venture inside for a tour of the bookshop in lieu of a visit to the metalsmith workshop.
Continuing your exploration of the city’s history, you’ll make your way to one of the most ornate churches in Lisbon, and possibly Portugal itself: the Church of São Roque. Though the exterior may not look like much, once you step inside and feast your eyes on the intricate carvings and gold inlays you’ll see why it’s one of the hidden gems of the area. Your local guide will show you its show-stopping feature; the chapel of Saint John the Baptist, and you’ll have the chance to see its archaeological museum which contains a number of sacred relics.
For a deeper insight into Lisbon’s awe-inspiring religious sites you’ll visit the Carmo Convent (Convento do Carmo). Hear about it’s tumultuous history when it was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake which caused it to cave in on top of a congregation gathered for mass. Though it stands roofless today, this was Lisbon's largest church before the earthquake hit and its gothic ruins make for a spectacular sight.
You’ll hear the full story of the earthquake as you make your way to yet another incredible view of the city. The Santa Luzia Viewpoint (Miradouro de Santa Luzia) offers a panorama of the city streets that will bring Lisbon’s story to life. A popular hangout and meeting spot, no visit to Chiado would be complete without stopping by Luís de Camões Square (Praça Luís de Camões) where you’ll be introduced to one of Portugal’s national legends: Fernando Pessoa. You’ll also get to see Café A Brasileira; one of the cornerstones of Lisbon’s literary scene and home to Portugal’s delicious Bica coffee.
After a day of sightseeing, there’s no better way to unwind for the evening than sipping on a few glasses of wine and enjoying some local specialties. Unwind at a local bar and sample traditional varieties of wine, including Portuguese green wine, along with a mouthwatering array of local cheeses and cured meats.
