Leave your Bern hotel around 8:30am, and travel to Visp by intercity train. Here, you’ll board the Matterhorn railway, traveling high into the mountain valley to reach the car-free village of Zermatt.
Sitting at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn mountain, Zermatt is one of the most eye-catching of the Swiss ski resort towns with its chocolate box wooden chalets and pretty streets. Take a stroll with your guide, and pass the shops, cemetery, and the mountain guides’ memorial — a stone dedicated to alpine climbers who lost their lives in the mountains.
Hear tales about the first ever Matterhorn ascent as you gaze up to the summit. After a quick coffee break at your own expense, you’ll then board the town’s cogwheel railway to visit the Gornergrat station, some 10,285 feet (3,135 meters) above sea level. Learn about the mountains from your guide, and see the hut of Monte Rosa with its impressive Matterhorn views.
After a break for a mountain lunch, you’ll return to Zermatt for a 40-minute visit to the local museum to learn about mountaineering and the first Matterhorn ascent. Then, return to the train station to travel back to Visp, then onto Bern. Your day trip ends around 6pm with a drop-off at your hotel.
