Halfway between Frankfurt and Nuremberg, and easily overlooked by bigger Bavarian cities, this jewel on the Main River is home to the country’s most important wine regions and vineyards. Würzburg is home to three of Germany’s largest wine producers and one of the best vineyards in all of the region of Franconia. It boasts a wide variety of monumental landmarks such as the massive Marienberg Fortress that overlooks the river valley, the Falkenhaus with its Rococo facade, the gothic Marienkapelle (Chapel of St. Mary). The Market Square, the historic Town Hall, Neumünster church with the Lusamgärtchen and the resting place of the famous medieval German minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide, the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main River Bridge) that offers a spectacular view of the Marienberg Fortress.
