Westminster Abbey Tour
Don’t miss a visit to the beautiful Westminster Abbey. Its history dates back to 1045 when King Edward the Confessor ordered its construction. What we can see today dates from 1245 to 1517, when the original Romanesque style was replaced by the Gothic after the remodeling ordered by Henry III.
We begin our visit at our meeting point, the Westminster Abbey entrance. Our guide takes us through the corners of this famous building, a traditional site for the wreaths and burials of the English monarchs and, later, the British monarchs. Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all English monarchs have been crowned at the Abbey, with the exception of Joan I and Edward V.
The ostentatious facade of the building offers a picturesque sight, while the golden towers and the statues of the kings are reflected in the river. The Victoria Tower flanks the palace. Also, learn about the history of the Elizabeth Tower; from the first medieval clock tower built in the former Palace of Westminster to the design and construction of the current Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben has become one of the most famous images of London, and one of the main symbols of the city and the structure of the Palace of Westminster has been considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987.
We see the numerous tombs of various members of the royal family, aristocrats, and illustrious personalities such as scientists and poets, including the tombs of Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Rudyard Kipling. More recently, the Abbey hosted Princess Diana’s funeral and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.
