This experience begins with your arrival before noon into Lalibela airport from Addis Ababa. We pick you up and take you to your hotel to get ready for your day visiting the rock-hewn churches. Your first day you will tour at least six of the magnificent rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic structures were carved directly into the mountains more than 800 years ago. This very important pilgrimage site consists of the largest monolithic church in the world, Bete Medhane Alem as well as fabulous carved reliefs and icon paintings.
Day two of your adventure begins with one of two choices: Either you start the morning with a trek with mules or by foot to Asheton Maryam monastery, which offers the chance to see a number of Orthodox relics as well as stunning views of the Lalibela; or you can take the short drive through the mountains to Yemrehanna Kristos, an impressive church situated in a shallow cave even older than the churches of Lalibela. After returning from either excursion you'll complete your tour of the remaining monolithic churches of Lalibela.
The next morning you take your flight back to Addis Ababa after breakfast.
