The Tower of London’s got almost 1,000 years of history to discover. Since William the Conqueror built the iconic White Tower way (way) back in the 10th century, the castle has taken many forms – from a royal fortress to a prison.

Nowadays, it’s the home to the crown jewels rather than convicted criminals. The collection of 23,578 precious gemstones has actually been kept here since 1661 – protected by armed guards, of course. Spot the Beefeaters, or Yeoman Warders as they’re formally known, giving guided tours (they’ve been doing it since the Victorian era) and telling tales of execution or torture. And, keep an eye out for the ravens. The black-as-night birds are known as the guardians of the Tower, see if you can spot all nine.

Other highlights include Armoury in Action, a hands-on experience with weapons including arrows, swords and cannons, and Medieval Palace which gives you a look into the luxurious side of the royal residence. Very posh.
