Legend says a prayer calmed the waves, clearing the way for a shogun to reclaim the land. The fishermen who built it were brought in from Osaka, and the food they invented out of necessity still shapes everything you'll taste here today.
While the wholesale market packed up for Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji's outer market remains. Here you can sample street food that sparked the growth of the world's largest fish market all those generations ago.

We had a fantastic tour with Hiroki! He was incredibly knowledgeable and took us to some really tasty stalls and shops in the market that we definitely wouldn't have found on our own. He also taught us a lot about the local temples and shrines, which was absolutely fascinating. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in fish markets, street food, nearby shrines and temples, and a cool less known spot that tourists completely miss.
