Tokyo Metropolis

Summary Description

Take a photographic trip through the lesser-known sights of Tokyo as you learn composition and technical tips to take your camera skills to the next level. This small-group tour is a great opportunity for both beginner and more advanced photography lovers alike to gain a new perspective on this fascinating Japanese capital.

Start your photography excursion by meeting your guide at the Steam Locomotive at Shinbashi station, and head to the Shiodome business district where you will photograph steel and glass towers by the morning light.

Here you will work on composition skills—how to frame a scene. You will also learn how to craft a story in your photos by using the environment and the people within.

Continue your photo-taking journey through Ginza, exploring the tiny back alleys and hidden pockets peppered throughout the area. During the day, you will encounter cooks and wait staff, as well as salarymen, going about their daily work.

Eventually, you will arrive at Yurakucho where you will photograph the interior of the immense Tokyo International Forum. Here you will find numerous photographic challenges which will allow you to create dramatic images. You can easily get a train to your next destination from here.

Average walking distance on this photography tour is 1.3 miles (2 km).

Description

What’s the Story?

Peering up in awe at monolithic steel and glass towers, one can’t help but feel small. Capture that feeling in your photographs, juxtaposing tiny human forms against cold and sterile structures. Contrast the artificial and man-made with the organic—hints of nature and human life surrounded by the Tokyo metropolis.

What We’ll Shoot

We will learn how to create compelling images of architectural elements and the people that populate the city’s concrete environs. You’ll be coached on using composition concepts like leading lines, negative space, and juxtaposition. We’ll practice using these techniques to convey a variety of narratives.

Where We’ll Explore

Our journey will begin in Shiodome—a district walled in with glass and steel skyscrapers. From here we will head to Ginza, famed for its broad avenues lined with intricate examples of avant-garde architecture. Afterward, we will end up in Yurakucho where we will explore the innards of the monolithic Tokyo International Forum.
