Depart from your Reykjavik hotel in a 4x4 jeep that has been specially customized to travel smoothly through Iceland’s rugged terrain, and make your way south to Thorsmork Valley, whose jagged landscape is surrounded by towering canyons and glaciers.
Wind through the foothills of Eyjafjallajokull Glacier, stopping briefly to take photos at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, before arriving in Basar, a hiking center at the heart of the valley. Listen to a safety briefing and then set off behind your guide at a steady pace. The route is 12 miles long and takes you by Fimmvorouhals Volcano, an active volcano which exploded into being in 2010.
Zigzag up steep trails past craters and cooling lava falls, taking in outstanding views of the highlands. As you walk, hear about the country’s landscape and volcanic activity from the guide. Roughly halfway through the hike, you’ll stop to eat the packed lunch that you brought along with you (own expense).
Your 6-8-hour hike concludes in Basar, after which you’ll ride back to your hotel in the 4x4 jeep.
Please note: The paths are relatively steep and require a good general fitness.
