The Smugglers' Route - Alcoutim
Tour info
Why take this tour?
This tour takes you to one of our most requested destinations – Alcoutim – by one of the best relaxing forms of transport: our upgraded cruise boat Jasmim Flor. The trip along the Guadiana River, the natural border between Portugal and Spain, takes around 2 hours. Relax on-board soaking up the scenery and tranquillity. In the past, the entire border region of the Guadiana lived from smuggling and it was based on this activity that we chose the name of our tour. A knowledgeable guide will tell you all about those smugglers and will take you along Alcountim’s landmarks. After this guided visit, you have 2 hours to yourself, perfect for a little shopping, lunch, a swim in the river beach, or a quick visit to Sanlucar (Spanish side of the river) and perhaps even a ride on the international zip line over the Guadiana River. We leave Alcoutim around 3pm and sail back to Vila Real de Santo António, where transport is waiting to take you back to your accommodation.

About operator:
This tour starts by boarding our beloved “Jasmim Flor” cruise ship at the Vila Real de Santo António quay, following a 2-hour circular cruise on the Guadiana River, along the Spanish-Portuguese border.
We start sailing down river, in front of Vila Real, until its mouth. Then, we invert the direction and sail up, passing by the medieval village of Castro Marim and the salt pans.
Ayamonte and the International Bridge are the following places to be appreciated. A unique opportunity to spot some of the differences between Spain and Portugal.
Around noon it’s time to start the guided tour of Vila Real de Santo António through the city’s historic heritage.
This stimulating exercise is followed by a tasty lunch in one of the city’s many typical restaurants.
After lunch, you can spend the rest of the afternoon as you like – wandering around the streets of the town, doing some shopping or stroll around the charming marina – as long as you’re back to the starting point at 4 pm.
