Once we have explored the history of Mexico City we will change the focus of the food to its local markets. If you haven’t eaten tacos in Mexico, you haven’t been to Mexico. Don’t worry, this tour will fix this problem. Our first stop will be a local taqueria or taco restaurant where you will try different kinds of tacos and glimpse Mexico’s local flavor.
The first market your professional guide will take you will be Mercado de San Juan. San Juan market is the home of food lovers. A whiff of their exotic meats and fruits and your inner foodie will be drawn in like a bee to honey. The market is famous for its exotic meats, vegetables, and fruits. One local delicacy on offer here is the chicatanas (leaf-cutter ants).
To finish this walking tour, we will go to La Ciudadela market, the one for the artisans. It is a one-stop shop for essentials for those looking to pick up souvenirs and gifts that will serve as a memoir of CDMX for their loved ones. The market is packed with more than 350 vendors, all selling goods from across the country. These goods include Oaxacan textiles, alebrijes – you might know them as the spirit animals in the 2017 animated movie Coco – and many homewares.
