Visit Mozart’s birthplace, now a museum, then continue through Mozartplatz on your way to the 17th-century Salzburg Cathedral. Keep walking to more Salzburg highlights, including the Prince-Bishops’ Palace and St. Peter’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery that was founded in 696.

If desired, you can pause for a bite to eat in the St. Peter Skiftskeller Restaurant—it’s the oldest restaurant in Salzburg, and the perfect place to try some traditional Austrian foods (both Mozart and Christopher Columbus are said to have eaten here).

The next stop is the Salzburg Fortress, which you’ll reach by a tram and funicular, which lead to a sweeping view of the historic city. Take some time to stroll the fortress walls, then descend into the old city for an hour-long cruise on the Salzach River. This 4-hour Salzburg tour concludes in the heart of the old city.

You visit the formerly secret Gotthard fortress in the Gotthard massif. The journey takes you on a scenic journey by train to the Gotthard region, passing Andermatt to the Gotthard Pass. In the fortress you take the metro in the mountain to access all the different rooms. Sasso San Gottardo is situated in the alpine mountains over 2000 meters above sea-level. Even in summer cooler temperatures are no exception. Inside the fortress temperatures are around 6-7 degrees C (tunnels, historic part), the exhibition rooms are between 14 and 18 degrees C. We recommend warm clothing and solid shoes.
