After morning port pickup, climb aboard a comfy van and begin your sightseeing shore excursion of Sitka, located at the edge of Baranof Island, one of the last stops of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Cross over the O’Connell Bridge and head on to Japonski Island, and hear from your informative guides about Sitka’s role in World War II. Change up the scenery with a visit to Sitka National Historical Park. Admire the historical and cultural treasures of the Tlingit and Haida totem poles that stand in the forests of hemlock and spruce. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Indian River, and if you’re here during the salmon season, learn about the wondrous life cycle of the salmon. Next, travel south on a scenic route along Silver Bay and arrive at the Fortress of the Bear, the largest bear reserve in North America. The habitat takes in orphaned bear cubs to live in a naturalized setting. Meet the caretaker staff and witness brown bears at play, from a fun and safe distance of 25 feet (8 meters) away. Other popular landmarks you see during your shore excursion include the Sitka Sound Science Center, Alaska Pioneer Home, Sheldon Jackson Museum and St Michael’s Cathedral.
