Experience the Best Food Market in the Dordogne

The medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is home to one of the largest and most prestigious food markets in the Dordogne region. This 2-hour guided walking tour allows you to experience the vibrant atmosphere of market day at its peak.

The medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda hosts one of the largest and most prestigious food markets in the Dordogne. On this immersive 2-hour tour, you’ll visit on market day to experience the town at its most vibrant and atmospheric. You will be accompanied by an expert English-speaking local guide specializing in the rich culinary heritage of the Perigord region.

A Taste of Tradition: Foie Gras & Award-Winning Delicacies

As you wander toward the heart of the market, you’ll begin your discovery of the region's finest seasonal produce. Our first stop is a charming, family-run boutique specializing in local delicacies. Here, you will enjoy a curated tasting of:

 • Artisanal duck and goose pâtés served on crisp local bread. • Award-winning Foie Gras from a top-rated producer, recognized for excellence at the prestigious Paris Agricultural Exhibition. Regional Cheeses & Bergerac Wines

Next, savor a unique local cheese: Trappe d’Echourgnac. Produced by Trappist nuns, this distinctive cheese is pressed, uncooked, and carefully aged using the "morge" scrubbing technique. Its secret? It is refined with walnut liqueur for a flavor you won’t find anywhere else. We’ll pair these bites with a tasting of both White and Red Bergerac wines, the perfect introduction to the vineyards of the Dordogne.

 Seasonal Treasures & Medieval Streets

Follow your guide through the winding medieval streets of Sarlat. This walking tour offers the perfect vantage point to spot the freshest seasonal products arriving from every corner of the Perigord. Depending on the time of year, you may have the chance to sample the famous Dordogne strawberries, celebrated for their sweetness and fragrance.

The Art of the Walnut Cake

No visit to Sarlat is complete without honoring the Dordogne walnut. We will stop at a beloved local producer of traditional walnut cakes. It is often said there are as many walnut cake recipes as there are ducks in the Dordogne—and that’s a lot! Your guide will take you to their favorite hidden gem to taste the best the town has to offer.

 Inside the Sainte-Marie Church Market

Our journey continues inside the Sainte-Marie Church, a stunning historic landmark transformed by architect Jean Nouvel into a covered market. This stop provides a sophisticated tasting experience featuring:

 • Foie Gras mi-cuit paired with a glass of sweet white wine. • Dried Duck Breast (Magret) seasoned with black pepper. Black Truffles: The Black Gold of Perigord

Learn all about the "King of Mushrooms"—the Perigord Black Truffle. Your guide will explain why these are so highly prized and show you where to find the best authentic truffles and black truffle oils to take home as a gourmet souvenir.

 The Grand Walnut Finale

We conclude our tour with a final, indulgent tasting dedicated entirely to the walnut. You will experience the full versatility of this local staple through:

 • Pure walnut oil and crunchy "croquants" (traditional dry biscuits). • Caramelized sugar walnuts. • A final glass of walnut liqueur to toast to a morning of delicious discoveries.
