Meet your guide at the entrance to the Ferry Building, where you begin the first half of your excursion. With the help of your culinary guide, taste your way through this landmark structure. Built in the 19th century and renovated in 2003, the Ferry Building’s concourse is now lined with farm stands, artisan food shops like Cowgirl Creamery, and restaurants like the celebrated upscale Vietnamese restaurant Slanted Door.
Then, with a satisfied stomach, head for Pier 33, where you board a ferry to Alcatraz. Once you arrive, get a brief orientation and pick up your audio tour, which the tour allows you to explore at your own pace while listening to commentary from employees and inmates of the former federal prison, which is now a national park. When you’re ready to return to the city, hop one of the ferries.
