Why take this tour?
Your tour begins with your friendly local guide meeting you outside of Container Village. From there, you will make your way to your first stop at the Three Sisters Lamp. This Victorian-style lamp consisting of three red gas lamps was originally lit in 1877, and is in direct line with the steeple of Trinity Church so that sea captains were able to navigate their way into Saint John Harbour safely at night. While here you will also be able to see the Port of Saint John, as well as Partridge Island.
Next, you will head toward Queen Square. With its lush green space, beautiful fountains, and stunning Victorian-era architecture, Queen Square is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. From there, you will make your way to King Square, a distinct yet similar square to Queen, with its beautifully maintained gardens, historic monuments, and Victorian-era architecture, as well as multiple cafes, restaurants and shops just waiting to be explored. As you walk through King Square you will see the Imperial Theatre, a premier venue for live performances that is sure to impress with its ornate architecture, including its soaring ceilings, intricate mouldings, and stunning stained-glass windows.
You will then make your way to the Loyalist Burial Ground. Established in 1784, the cemetery was used as the final resting place for many of the city's early settlers and features a collection of old headstones and monuments, some of which date back to the late 1700s, offering a glimpse into the city's past.
Once you leave the Loyalist Burial Ground, you will head to the City Market. Established in the late 1700s, the market has been a central gathering place for locals and visitors alike for centuries. Today, the market is a vibrant hub of activity, offering a diverse range of goods and services, including locally-sourced produce, artisanal food items, handcrafted gifts, and more. You will love venturing through this amazing market.
When you have finished making your way through the City Market, you will walk through the Harbour Passage. Harbour Passage is a network of linked walking and cycling paths, lookout points, and historical landmarks that link the northern and western parts of the city with uptown Saint John. You will be blown away by the views along the way.
As you make your way through the Harbour Passage, you will reach Fort La Tour, where your tour will come to an end. Enjoy taking a walk back in time at this military post as you learn about the rich history of the area and explore the remnants of the fortification before parting ways with your guide.
