Sacred Valley Full-Day

Summary

Pick up from your hotel at 7:30am, transfer to Chinchero and then to the trail head at Tauca, a small Andean community. You will start hiking uphill surrounded by beautiful mountains, with the presence of llamas, alpacas, and lovely views of Lake Piuray until you reach the only mountain pass at 4500m/14760ft. You will then descend along a restored Inca Trail for approximately one hour towards the small Andean community of Pukamarca (4010m/13153ft). From there, you will walk downhill towards the Leon Punku ravine, where you will find the remains of an Inca bridge and trail. This canyon boasts geological formations surrounded by massive stones and boulders that direct the river to Huchuy Qosqo at 3600m/11808ft. You will arrive there by early afternoon. Huchuy Qosqo is an Inca archaeological complex with impressive architecture plus a large open ceremonial center; from here you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley, the Vilcanota River, and the snowcapped mountain range of the same name. Why take this tour?

The hills above the Sacred Valley are filled with Inca sites and small communities that are rarely visited by tourists. The Huchuy Qosqo Trek offers the adventurous traveler a peek at one these rarely-visited sites, Huchuy Qosqo (“Little Cusco”), as well as the opportunity to hike in the high Andes. Legend holds that a century before the Spanish invasion, the Inca Emperor Viracocha and his retinue retreated to Huchuy Qosqo when the Inca capital city of Cusco was attacked by their fierce rivals, the Chancas tribe. Viracocha left the defense of the city to his son, Pachacutec, who repelled the invaders and went on to become famous as the Inca Emperor who vastly expanded the Empire and built its most important sites, including Machu Picchu.
