This full-day tour begins in Frankfurt with a 30-minute drive west to the sophisticated, historical spa town of Wiesbaden, the capital of the German state of Hessen.
Stroll through the town’s streets, admiring the elegant villas and historical houses as well as the exclusive boutiques, galleries and cafés. There are 26 thermal springs here, making Wiesbaden the ultimate benchmark of any spa town. Many hotels have their own thermal spas, including the Kurhaus, the top spa house in the city. Kurhaus serves as the city’s convention center and social centerpiece and also houses the popular Wiesbaden Casino.
After visiting the town, take Germany’s oldest water-powered Neroberg Mountain Railway to the top of Neroberg Mountain (of course) for a stellar view of Wiesbaden and the surrounding area. Stop for lunch (own expense) and visit the Russian Orthodox St. Elizabeth Church.
Retreat back down the mountain and make the 20-minute drive across the Rhine River to the city of Mainz. Enjoy a walking tour of the city’s historical center and market square – past its churches, half-timbered houses, cobblestone alleyways and some of its most popular attractions. See the Gutenberg Museum, one of the oldest museums of printing in the world; St. Stephen’s Church, a Gothic hall collegiate church with the only stained glass windows by Russian-French artist Marc Chagall; and the 1,000-year-old Roman Catholic Mainz Cathedral.
The tour concludes with a return trip to Frankfurt.
