When your cruise ship docks in port in Road Town, Tortola, meet your tour guide and they will assist you in getting a taxi to the kayak shop. Start your shore excursion with a drive about 5 miles (8 km) down the coast toward the eastern end of the island.
Listen to a quick safety briefing before hopping in your 2-person kayak, and then set off across the mangrove-lined bay. Paddle leisurely, following your guide into the heart of a mangrove forest. These shallow, protected waters act as a nursery ground for Caribbean marine life that live on the coral reef.
Hear about this ecosystem and its inhabitants from your guide, and get an up-close look — and even touch — species like sea stars and sea cucumbers. Then paddle past the ruins of an old fort built into the rocks. While you examine the ruins, listen to a bit of history about Tortola’s colonial and pirate years from the 1600s to mid-1700s. Check out an old Quaker burial ground below the fort, and hear about its connection to the architect who designed the US Capitol.
When you get out of the water, enjoy a provided soft drink or other refreshment, and use the freshwater shower and changing room. Then head back to the port, where your shore excursion ends.
