Begin your private tour with hotel pickup in Reyjavik, and travel by comfortable, spacious Chevrolet Suburban SUV to Iceland’s rugged south, famous for its lava plains, glacier-tipped volcanoes and black beaches. Bring a picnic (own expense), or ask your guide to stop at a restaurant they recommend for lunch (own expense) during your travels.
On route, hear tales of the south's history and geology, and let your guide know if there’s anything you want to see more or less of. Your tour is private, so the itinerary can be adjusted around your personal interests.
Journey over the Hellisheidi mountain pass, and view the Hengill volcano, home to one of the largest geothermal power plants in Iceland.
Pay a visit to the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall, set against the backcloth of the glacier-tipped Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Gaze at the volcano, and learn the story and secrets of its infamous eruption in 2010, when volcanic ash clouded the sky and caused major disruption to air traffic across Europe.
Stop to see another of Iceland’s stunning waterfalls — Skógafoss. Soak up the sight and sound of the roaring cascade of water, and visit the Solheimajokull glacier on the Myrdalsjokull ice field. View the vast ice expanses as you hear how the glacier was formed, and how it is gradually retreating.
Next, take a scenic drive along Iceland’s craggy southern coast. Take in the famous black beach at Vik, and then admire the sea cliffs at the black pebble beach at Reynisfjara, made up of striking basalt rock columns.
Afterward, absorb more of south Iceland’s epic scenery as you make your way back to Reykjavik, where your tour ends with a hotel drop-off in the early evening.
