Leave your Vienna hotel by minivan and travel from the city to the UNESCO-listed countryside of the Wachau Valley. As the region is known for its wine, your first stop is at a traditional tavern (heurigen), where you sample five famous varietals. Continue to Dürnstein, a UNESCO-listed town to sample products typically made there. Chow down on chocolate, fruit preserves, and schnapps. Then, enjoy some free time for lunch (own expense). After a second wine tasting in the village of Weissenkirchen, head to Sptiz, where the waters of the stunning Danube await. Summer tours allow you to soak up sights of riverside vineyards, castles, and monuments as you cruise along the river to Melk and then hop out to explore Melk Abbey at leisure; winter tours include a traditional lunch. Your day trip then ends with the journey back to Vienna, finishing at your hotel.
